Our crew stopped at a home to distribute food to the several dogs who live there. The resident quickly came outside and pointed out a pregnant female, shepherd/husky/collie cross?? and asked us to please take her as she is about to give birth. We quickly made room for her in the truck where she settled in to the warmth and comfort of her own kennel! Now the rescue crew fairly sped away from the community in order to get Valentine to the Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic for examination and treatment before she began whelping. She is extremely thin, despite her long fluffy coat trying to cover up her bones, and is in need of a bath, a good brushing to take away her mats, and lots of very high quality puppy food.
Valentine will likely give birth as soon as tomorrow, in a nice warm place where she will get masses of affection and love until it is her time to find a forever family. Photos to follow!
Valentine was able to be rescued today (Feb 2, 2008) because of the generosity of a new foster home in Alix. We are very grateful.
Valentine is a really affectionate lovely girl!Watch for updates and birth announcements!
Update 05 Feb 08: Valentine gave birth to 5 puppies on Sunday, Febraury 3rd. She and her new foster mom, Holly, worked diligently from about 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Happily Valenine is doing very well, and the pups are healthy. There are 3 boys and 2 girls; 4 black pups and 1 blonde.
Update 19 Feb 08: Valentine is putting on weight like crazy! She didnt really like the bathtub but with alittle coaxing and reasuring, she did just fine. I gave her a good brushing and had to cut out some of her mats. She got her nails done too!! Valentine is a huge suck and loves to cuddle. she loves all the attention she can get, which is alot..24/7. On Feb 16th, all of the pups opened their eyes! They are all fat and doing well. We named the two girls Nixon and Nikita and the three boys are Diesel, Deegan and Danzin

Belle and Tasha- ( 2 like this one!)
Feb.23/08 Well, me & Tasha are back, but by no fault of our own. Apparently one of the kids in our new home is allergic to us, so they've decided to surrender us back to SCARS. We are now 5 1/2 months old and really sweet girls. We are a husky cross, so will likely be medium to large size dogs. If you are looking for a puppy like us, and who has already gotten a start on house-training, come and check us out!
For Information call 780-462-8482 Edmonton

I've been with SCARS for about a week now, and have moved into my new foster home here in the city of Edmonton. I've been neutered & vaccinated & micro-chipped, and I can't say that was such an enjoyable experience. Well, at least that part is done.
I am about a yr old, and I really love affection, but I'm pretty scared of you 2-leggers. I've had to fend for myself probably most my life, and people have probably chased me away when I've gotten into garbage looking for food, so I'm looking for someone to be patient with me so that I can learn that not all people are mean. I'm very loving and gentle, and will lay on the floor with my head on your lap while you gently stroke my fur and tell me how beautiful I am.
Could I be the boy for you? I'm only about 40lbs.
Cowgirl and lots of Husky friends!

Askim is a un neutered male Siberian Husky, who will be 3 this April. He is very energetic, super fast, and very lean, partially based on his lack of interest in 'crunchies' & lack of exercise. He's never completely settled into being a 'house' dog, and is bouncing off the walls most of the time, or running circles in the backyard. Even though he is super sweet, In alot of ways his personality matches his wolfy look :)
I think with the right person and the right environment, he has the potential of being an amazing pet. He still requires lots of training, LOTS of exercise and needs someone that is good with dogs, has lots of patience & is up for a challenge.
I also think there is a possibility he would make a good sleddog, He is still young, has not been neutered, and like I said very energetic, just loves to run & run & run. I think that a sleddog life style could potentially be very satisfying for him. Of course most importantly though, we do want to find him a good & LOVING home, so if that was with a sled dog team, it would be very important to us how the dogs are kept, What is done with the dogs in 'down time', like the summer and once they are 'retired', if they are kept out side, or have a dog home etc..
I can't really tell you much about his background/breeding. We took him in from a co-worker, who said the breeders are a Sherri & Tim Wegner, out of thorsby. The paper just says, mother & father (no names) were both Siberian Huskies, born in 2000, and Askhim was their 3rd litter of 9 puppies, born April 15, 2005. The papers certainly were not very official and we've never tried to contact them as it didn't matter to us. Someone has suggested that he looks like a seppala siberian.
He was about 9 mos. when we got him, and it took him a few days to eat, and about a week to warm up to us. I 'think' he was abused, just because he is so stand off-ish, a little jumpy, and easily spooked by strangers trying to touch him. He generally takes kinder to women, But he is totally fine being out & around people, he's very indifferent so long as he doesn't feel threatened. He does bark at company (when they are in HIS house), but gets over it pretty fast, and lets people pet him ... on his terms. Once you're in with him though, it's all kisses. He really is very sweet.
He is also quite territorial, walks well on leash but does pull & can tend to be slightly aggressive towards other dogs. He is a boy, who thinks he is king :) He is an really amazing & wonderful dog though, I love him very much, and will only give him to a home where he can be the best he can be.
If you are interested, and or would just like some more info, Please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hobo is a stray who has been injured along the way. His left hind leg has repaired itself but he lifts the leg and is not in pain. His tail tip
had to be amputated due to another injury. Hobo is about 8 months old and is good with other dogs and kids. He is ok with cats, but would prefer
a dog for a companion. Hobo is kennel trained and potty trained and is fairly good in the car as well. He is smaller then the average Shepherd.
He does pull on the leash and is learning not to do that as much.
